Rivian doesn't look like a car company, think like a car company, or act like a car company — so when Jeff Johnson directed "The Lucky Ones", he didn't make a film about a car. He made a film about friendship and adventure, captured through the inspiring story of his dear friend Ben Moon. Through Ben's story, Johnson perfectly captures the Rivian ethos: keep the world adventurous forever.

Filmed on a road trip through the striking landscape of Western Canada, the documentary pays homage to outdoor adventures shared over the course of Johnson and Moon’s fifteen year friendship. The photographers met in 2005 on what Johnson describes as his first real photography assignment, when Moon’s diagnosis was still recent.

Released at the height of the Covid-19 crisis, Moon’s story reminded us that human struggle is universal, and once it passes, can bring us to recalibrate our priorities in pursuit of deeper meaning and connection. Johnson’s work as a documentary filmmaker elicited wanderlust from even the most homebodied viewer - capturing raw and realistic renderings of adventure during a time when travel and movement were limited.

On April 16, 2020 we hosted our first ever virtual camera club. Ben, Jeff, and Rivian creative director Larry Parker dug deeper into the meaning behind the film, in a conversation facilitated by Los York founder Seth Epstein.
